I purchased this blade cheap at auction on a hunch it was military issue. When I picked up it was sitting in a NC barn rusting away and I can't make out any of the markings but it resembles a USMC handle (I think). We're going to do a level one reconditioning to clean her up a bit and see if we can identify.

----------------------------------
The US Disston machete, often referred to simply as the "Disston machete," is a type of machete that has been popular among survivalists, outdoor enthusiasts, and military personnel.

1. Manufacturer:
The Disston brand was originally known for its high-quality saws, established by Henry Disston in the 19th century. Over time, the brand expanded into other tools, including machetes.

2. Design and Features:
  • Blade: Typically, Disston machetes feature a robust, full-tang construction, meaning the metal of the blade extends all the way through the handle, providing strength and durability. The blade is often around 18 inches long, though variations exist.
  • Material: Made from high-carbon steel, which offers a good balance between hardness for edge retention and toughness to resist breaking.
  • Handle: The handle might be Micarta (a type of composite material), or other durable materials, designed for a secure grip even when wet or during vigorous use.
3. Use Cases:
  • Military and Survival: These machetes have been used by various military units for jungle operations, where a machete is invaluable for clearing vegetation, chopping wood, or as a survival tool.
  • Outdoor and Camping: Popular among campers and hikers for trail blazing, cutting through underbrush, or as a utility tool for camp chores.
  • Agricultural: Traditionally, machetes like the Disston are used in agriculture for clearing land, harvesting crops, or general farm work.
4. Popularity and Collectibility:

Over the years, the Disston machete has gained a cult following not just for its utility but also as a collectible. Vintage or limited edition Disston machetes can fetch high prices among collectors due to their historical significance and quality craftsmanship.

5. Cultural Impact:
In various survival and outdoor literature, the Disston machete is often praised for its reliability and versatility. It's sometimes featured in survival guides, movies, or TV shows where characters need a robust tool for wilderness scenarios.

If you're looking for a machete with a blend of history, quality, and utility, the US Disston machete or its modern equivalents would be a solid choice.

Excellent and Thanks! I cleaned it up a bit more last night. This is a great blade. Very well made and obviously durable.
Now I'm on the hunt for an appropriate sheath and planning to sharpen.
